Moody Gardens Adventures!

This year for Spring Break we decided to head to Galveston, TX for a few days.  We had never been before and I had heard good things about some of the attractions and that there is quite a bit to do with kids.  Since it’s only about a 4 hour drive and there’s a beach, I was totally game, as were the rest of this party of five.

After a brief stint at the beach on Thursday afternoon, it was clear that it was going to be sketchy weather for the rest of our time there and we planned to go to Moody Gardens on Friday so it worked out quite well.

Moody Gardens has so many things to do and even though a few of them were automatically a “no go” because of the weather, (no ropes course or paddlewheel boat ride for us) the fun and attractions inside the pyramids were enough to fill our day.  We also had a really delicious lunch at the restaurant as we dined outside, under cover, while it rained.

I myself was excited to go into the rainforest pyramid because I have been inside something like this before and I wanted to see what this one was like.  It did not disappoint!  The kids (and parents) had a great time checking out the sloth and bats and leaf-cutter ants and all kids of beautiful and interesting birds.  There may have also been a kimono dragon that I was really glad was behind thick glass (the sign said something about eating me so…)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Next we moved on to the Ice Age display in the Discovery Pyramid.  But not before the kids stopped to pretend to be tree frogs and experience their own little hurricane…

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lastly we hit up the aquarium, after watching a really cool film by Jacques Cousteau’s son, in the 3D movie theater.  It was about the bottom of the ocean and the tiny life that lives there and produces A LOT of our oxygen.  I really love that my kids learned a few things on this excursion, as well.  And of course, so did I.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And don’t you know at the end there was a great gift shop!  That may have been the kids favorite part.  Oh just kidding!  They told me otherwise.  Ben loved the bats, Gavin liked the sharks and Katie said she liked the aquarium in general the most.

 

 

 

 

We really did have a great time as a family.  I would have visited on a sunny day as well! 😉

There was so much to do and see and it was a great way to learn a few things and see some really interesting creatures.  Moody Gardens is a wonderful Southeast Texas attraction and in a great location on the island.  There is also a hotel right on site and   Schlitterbahn is right next door so next time we go we may make an entire weekend of it, just in that one parking lot!
