The boys were out of school today because their little school house was burglarized last night.  The two donated televisions that they used to watch educational videos and the occasional movie were stolen and the back window was smashed.  When I drove up to drop them off this morning the police were there.  My boys took it personally and so did I.  We all love their school and the people who teach them.  And their teachers and classmates have become family too.  The school house is their second home.

As we drove back to our house Ben expressed his hurt and how terrible a thing it was for someone to do that.  Gavin chimed in too and Katie was even “so mad” at the “bad guys”!

At first I was also a tad bummed that school was unexpectedly cancelled since I had my day planned out – Katie and I would hit the gym (her in the daycare while I worked out) and then run a few errands and I would get some things done at home that I needed to do and catch up on.

But as we continued the drive back to the house we decided to get some math worksheets from the internet, still do silent reading like they do at school and maybe watch a show or two.  And I was determined to still get in some kind of workout so we the kids all got on their bikes and I “chased” them around the neighborhood for a good mile (in other words, I ran) and when we got back to our house I did some other exercises.  I still sweated and got my heart rate up and we all got outside together.  It was pretty great, actually.

The boys did their math without a blink of an eye and did their reading as requested.  There may have been some playing with Legos here and there too.  We even had a little lesson in money as we bought our lunches at Chick Fil A at the mall, when we all went out to buy our friend a birthday present together.  No one fought, no one lost it, everyone knew we were only at the good ole TRU for a gift for our friend (okay, and one LEGO movie mini figure per child because I’m a really nice Mommy).

I started to think on the drive back home from the mall that I kinda have this Mom Thing down now… that a day of the four of us together and the changing of plans was not all that big of a deal after all and that I am in a good place with my kids right now.  The oldest helps me, the middle guy is finally good with putting on his own shoes and socks (don’t ask) and the youngest is fairly independent in her own right.  And although I am still called upon a lot to assist with this or that, it is not as constant as it used to be.  They can play on their own, dress themselves and mostly wipe their own bottoms.

Going out with them all is not nearly the big deal that it used to be, or at least how I built it up in my head.  Although I still do not like to take them all to the grocery store, mostly because the cart ends up full of all kinds of things that they (or me) do not need to consume.

I think we are getting to a point where having three kiddos is more fun that it is crazy and I am totally good with that.

Of course ask me tomorrow and I will probably have a different opinion entirely but that’s okay, TODAY was really good. 🙂
