HGTV Would be Proud

May 12, 2008 by Elaine

The Kitchen is almost done!

Although there are few finishing touches yet to complete, the kitchen is glorious with it’s new look and I am so excited to have all the big projects done!! I promised some pictures of the days of yore as well as the new and improved, so here we go.

Here it was when we bought the house. Can you see the sheen on those cabinets? And that Waverly wall paper? That is some 80’s greatness I tell ya! (If you have a kitchen that still looks like this it’s ok. I just couldn’t live with it myself!)

I know. You are asking yourself, why did they buy this house again? It’s alright, we knew what we were in for. Or did we? Ok, maybe not but we were first time home buyers. We were suckers. I mean, who isn’t? (don’t tell me that you are not because I don’t want to hear it!). So yeah, those first renovations took a while and the love of my life even had to enlist help on the cabinet painting. It was a bigger job than him but… he’s a big enough man to admit it.

So, this is what the kitchen looked like after the first phase of re-do, over three and half years ago.

I will admit that it looks a lot better but we still have the floor (that someone must have grouted after they drank a couple of six packs) and the counter-tops that I lived with but despised deep down. And of course the lovely ceramic tile backsplash. I do have to give a little props to the backsplash though, since it sort of helped me choose colors the first time around and held up quite well. But, alas, it had to go.

So at the end of the day Thursday, when the new backsplash was complete I told Tim that the top color, above the chair railing in our breakfast nook, was no longer going to work with the new stuff. So you know what he did on Saturday? He painted it a new color that goes just wonderfully! (LOVE HIM!) It’s actually a color that we recently painted our dining room, his office, our entry way and the bar area in a our living room. I hope we like it! HA!

Ok, so without further ado here’s the finished product. With a bonus picture of the breakfast nook. And now we are in search for a new table possibly something in the “java” family would be nice. I will let you know if we find it… (this renovation thing never ends!)

P.S. I love the new Kitchen, can you tell?

Here are all the pics “smushed” together (thanks honey!) so that you can see the stages of the kitchen even better.

Hope everyone had a great Mother’s Day! I’m gonna go hang out in my new kitchen now… ; )

It looks great! I love that you showed the transition.

Our kitchen looked really similiar to the first shot – ugly peach flowered wallpaper, nasty ceiling fan, HUGLY cubboards…

We completely redid the whole thing a couple years back and I still LOVE it!

Yay for the big part being done, enjoy the fruits of your labours.

    And Happy belated Mother’s day.

Whew, that was a long one!

That is quite the difference! And, much better! The colors in the first made it seem tiny. The neutral really opened it up.

And fyi according to my husband (real estate agent) the best place to get a return investment on your home improvements is in the kitchen. You did good, really good 🙂

Wow, what a transformation! It looks amazing, and I love the stone backsplash you chose.

I am thinking about painting my cabinets. They are original to the house, which was built in the 50s, and pretty grimy! Any tips??

That looks great! We still have an ’80s kitchen, but we did remove the hideous wallpaper and install new flooring. That alone made a huge difference.

    Hi E!

Great bang up job! Looks oober bright and light. I am doing the same thing to my entire house right now. My house flooded with the town’s sewer main in March… yep… ultra YUCK! It is torn to the dirt inside, drywall is cut out, bathtub, woodstove and masonry, cabinets, the whole 9! I have been couch surfing with my 2 adorable pitbull mutts and a cat-tastic. All 4 of us can fit on a couch, no problem. It has been a heck of a ride. Your kitchen makeover is inspiration for me, because when the dust settles, and when the town’s insurance company winds up their paperwork, then I can put my house back together in an even more refreshing way! Too bad I don’t have too many before and after shots for comparison! I also can’t wait to finally replace my shoe collection, among the many other things that went up Shit Creek! Love ya, hug the boys for me! Auntie Corrie

WOW! You guys sure are doing a lot of work! But it looks great and I know you are feeling such accomplishment right now! Our last house was a huge fixer-upper. We ripped up floors and tore down walls. At one point when you opened the master bathroom door, you could see the dirt under the house because there was no flooring. At. All. So great job! I know you are so thrilled!
