Giving Gav His Credit Where Credit it is Due

The other day Gavin and Katie were sitting down at the table to work on their homework at the same time as Ben.

Obviously Katie does not have actual homework but she likes to pretend like she does while the boys do theirs.  Often times I will put our big ole container of crayons on the dining table since G uses them for some of his work.  The other day I put them down on his side and then he moved them between him and and K and said, “Here Katie, this way we can share.”

A year ago, that would have NEVER happened.

And his manners.  Insisting he say “please” and “thank you” and “Yes M’am” and “Yes Sir” has most certainly payed off.  He usually does it without me asking now.

There is less fit-throwing and much less whining!  And he is always so excited to tell me about the things he has learned, like the fact that Louisiana is shaped like a boot AND the letter “L”!  He  unknowingly added 7 plus 3 correctly  the other day, right in his head which totally blew me away.  I am hoping he will be a math whiz like his father (although I’m actually the one who is good at fast math -ha!)

I was a tad worried about him starting school but I have seen nothing but positive changes since he has.  He adores his teacher and talks about something she did or said pretty much every day after school.

The other day his teacher called me regarding the upcoming Kindergarten field trip to the fire station. Once we were done talking about that she made sure to tell me what a joy he is to have her class and what a sweet and smart boy he is.

So far, I am loving the age 5 for him.  And with the onset of Kindergarten I see a maturing boy emerging and it is pretty amazing. I won’t lie, he and I have had some rough spots in the past.  He is definitely my most snuggly and passionate (in both good and challenging(!) ways) child.  But I feel the calm after the storm is coming and that my little boy is changing right before my eyes.

And he’s pretty darn cute too.
(that dimple is just killer, yes?)
