You DON’T Have a Blog??

September 2, 2014 by Elaine

I was in church the other day and I was supposed to be listening to the priest.  And I was, for the most part.

But my mind drifted for minute or two, as it tends to do sometimes,  and I noticed a woman and her family – her husband and their three sons – in the front pew.

I thought about some of my blogging friends who have 3 boys (yes, I thought about blogging in church.  It’s okay, God still loves me)

I wondered if this woman had a blog.  I then immediately assumed she does not.  I’ve seen her around church before but do not “know” her.

Not a lot of people in the small city where I live have blogs.  At least not that I know of anyway.  And I assume after 5 years I would know them all, right?

Sure.

Anyway, I started to think about how the conversation would go if I, as a blogger myself, started questioning someone who does not have a blog as to why… (this was after church… mostly……)

Also, please note, this entire convo is in my head and is completely tongue-in-cheek and comes from someone who has been blogging for awhile and who has gotten many a strange look when talking about HAVING a blog…

So, I heard you DON’T have a blog…?

No, I don’t actually.

Don’t you take photos of your kids?

Yes.

So what do you do with them?

Oh I print them out or make photo books with them.

So you don’t post them online?

Well, sometimes I will put one here or there on Facebook if it is a big milestone, like Kindergarten graduation or something like that.  Or if we are on vacation… you know…

So you don’t write?

I do, sometimes, in a journal.  You know, with a pen.

But then how to get feedback from others?

Well, I don’t.  I write personal stuff that others do not need to read…

Oh wow. Huh.  That’s interesting.  What about twitter – you’re on there right?

No.  What’s twitter?  Oh wait, I think I’ve heard of that… I don’t GET that at all though. Too confusing.

You don’t’ have a lot of friends do you?

You mean like on Facebook??

No, I mean in general.  I have LOTS of friends on my computer.  I met them through my blog, it’s pretty awesome.  Too bad you have to miss out on BlogHer and stuff like that…

What is BlogHer?

It’s an annual blogging conference I go to every year where bloggers get together to meet and learn and hang out.

Oh.  That sounds fun. But yeah… I don’t have a blog so…

Yeah. Bummer for you.  Sorry, I just don’t really get this “no blog” thing…  Maybe you should start one.

What would I say?

Oh forget it.  If you don’t know what you’d say then you don’t need to have one.  Just keep posting to Facebook…

I think what it really comes down to is that I cannot imagine being someone without a blog, just like many non-bloggers don’t know what it is like to have a blog.

Awesome people I know because they have a blog!

Awesome people I know because they have a blog!

What would you (if you’re a blogger) ask someone who does NOT have a blog??

Oh, this is awesome! I’m so used to the opposite, hearing what is a blog, anyway… which generally comes from the same people who share blog posts on FB from people like Scarymommy, they just have no idea what they are sharing is a blog.

I always get funny looks when I say I have a blog or I’m a blogger. I feel like most people IRL don’t get that I blog or what blogging is. Though lately I’ve had a friend IRL start a blog and it’s been kinda weird and fun. We are going to a blog conference together this weekend 🙂

A long time ago, way before I became a mom, many people suggested I start a blog because I like writing. I pooh-poohed them, saying, “No one is interested in what I have to say.”

Then I started one in 2011 and can’t imagine NOT blogging. 🙂

Haaaaaaaaaaa I don’t get that no blog thing either. It’s worrisome that people don’t need external validation about…everything. WHO DO THEY TALK TO ALL DAY?

Wait, you don’t have a blog? Well what is your hobby? I could retire if I had a dime for every time someone referred to my blog as a hobby.

I love how you turned it around! I get weird looks and questions when I tell people I have a blog, but that’s ok. They’re missing out.
Also, I have two friends at church who write blogs.

Oh yeah- this is brilliant!! Most ‘in real life people’ don’t get this blogging world at all…. I always find myself trying to validate my blog! Classic post from a classic blogger!!

Now go ask that mom if she has a blog, and why she doesn’t!! Three boys? She needs to blog!

It is easy when you are in the blogging world to think everyone blogs and everyone should blog, and seriously why would you not blog? The craziest thing for me was my first Power of Moms conference I went to. I was able to go to it because I am a blogger (they were looking for someone to promote it in my area)- it is an amazing on-line site for mothers, so on-line, check… so when I went I just sort of assumed that all of the women attending must be bloggers too, right? So not the case and it totally just threw me.

I agree! There have been times when I got so frustrated with blogging that I thought about giving up on it, but I know I would miss it too much. However, I have certainly gotten some looks and questions about it. Would you believe, though, that my church has blogs?? A couple of our pastors blog (or attempt to) and, since I am on staff there now, I was once referred to as a blogging expert in a staff meeting. Ha!

I was just talking to a friend who was ribbing me because 6 years ago, I wasn’t even on facebook because I thought it was “creepy.” Now, I told him, I might as well just take my clothes off and run around because that’s about all that’s left to hide.

This is great. Such a perfect response to all those conversations we have where people wonder what a blog is and why we do it.

I love reading blogs, and love the thought of BEING a blogger, but I (a) don’t have the time, and (b) don’t really think I have anything to say that other people would be interested in. But I’d love to go to BlogHer and get to meet the bloggers that I read all the time. Is that weird? Would it be totally demented to start a blog just so I can go to BlogHer with a straight face? (Is it worth the divorce that would ensue if I picked up one more time-consuming obsession that keeps me from spending time with my family?)

      And no, not worth divorce!
