The Happy Mama Movement Begins!

January 28, 2014 by Elaine

My kids surprise me sometimes.  I mean, actually, they surprise me a lot.  And of course not always in a way I want to be surprised.

Sometimes they come around the corner in a Batman mask to purposely surprise me and I pee a little.  That way is definitely not my favorite.

And sometimes they catch me off-guard by taking ALL 5 kajillion of their stuffies and spreading them on the living room floor, making a “bed”, meanwhile dumping all the toys from the toy shelf on top of the bed spread they drug from their bedroom as well and making a “Super Party”!!!

Yeah, they do that one a lot.  I guess I should not be surprised by it anymore, huh?

But then, there are those times that they surprise me by doing something I really was not expecting and when I come to find them doing that something my heart swells and I melt into a little puddle.

You know, like THIS:

photo (18)

I mean, y’all I couldn’t breathe for a second because of the awesome.  What you have to understand is it is not just the fact that an older brother is reading to his little sister.  It is the fact that it is THIS older brother because  A) WOAH, he can totally read now and B) This is not really his kind of thing – to SIT STILL and read by his own choice.  It is simply not his personality.  So, to see them sitting there, like this, well I kinda cannot express how it made me feel.

Maybe it is like after a mother gives birth and hears the baby cry and sees that it is okay and breathing and finally sees the infant’s face after carrying it in her womb for so many months.  Maybe it sounds a bit extreme but I still think it compares.  Getting our kids to each stage is a labor of love.  This picture means more to me than most will ever know.

Oh I love this! My kids keep surprising me too. I’ve been trying hard to find happiness in just being with them. I think I’m guilty of always trying to DO something with them. Off to check out this Happy Mama Movement – I think I could get behind that. Ha!

Dude #2 was caught reading to Dude #3 the other day and, yes, just this. He NEVER reads and he doesn’t enjoy books unless I read them to him. But after they finished he goes, “We should read every night.” Which of course made little brother who idolizes him so very happy. He finally found a way to be close to him that doesn’t involve being a hostage!

I LOVE moments like that where you see pure connection between your kids. Last week, Madison was coming downstairs from sleeping and she and Charlotte met at the bottom of the stairs and greeted each other and then hugged hello. Totally unprompted, on their own, just ‘hey, I’m so glad you’re awake and ready to start the day with me’ kind of thing. It was precious.

Oh, I so get that photo, and I know exactly what you mean. Each stage steals our breath away and reminds us why we are doing all of this. I’ll take one tiny moment like this for months of stuffies on the floor.

That is so sweet! I love it when I see my kids doing something together like that! I don’t have anything really recent about this subject on the blog, but I do have one from over the summer that I linked up…it’s actually a guest post written by my husband.

The awe and beauty of motherhood never ceases to take my breath away. I look at my boys and think, “you’re such little HUMANS!” all the time. I made those. They weren’t and now that are. And when they love each other and take care of each other? I just don’t know what to do with myself, so I usually cry.

I adore this Happy Mama Movement. It’s a beautiful thing to put into the interwebs.

I feel like Scarlet and Des argue all of the time but I saw her playing with him at the airport last week and it was making him stop whine/cry and I was so touched. Truly a happy mama moment.
