I’m Feeling All Domestic Like

September 29, 2008 by Elaine

Yesterday I found myself doing something that I NEVER thought I would EVER find myself doing. It’s not that big of a deal or even that ODD to some, I am sure, but it does seem a little antiquated to me. And this is my blog, so I am asking myself (and you)… who vacuums in their apron anymore these days?

Apparently, I do.

Let me rewind here a little and say that I bought this apron at Crate & Barrel “many moons ago” (phrase borrowed from my apron-wearing mother). I have never worn it. Ok, maybe once. I just don’t think to put an apron on before I start cooking/baking.

On Saturday… I wore that thing for like 3 hours.

I had two lasagnas to make (one for a friend who just had a baby and one for us and some friends for dinner) and a few other chores to do. And, since I had JUST showered and put on nice, clean clothes when I started my cooking, I didn’t want to get them dirty. It was then that it occured to me that somewhere I had possession of a nifty thing called an apron! Thankfully it didn’t take long to hunt it down.

And now – I will be wearing it ALL. THE. TIME.

I mean I could wipe my hands all over it while I was cooking and didn’t have to worry about getting anything on my clothes! : )

It has pockets so if I wanted to grab something and put it in there (rag, spice, spatula!) I could!

And guess what – my clothes didn’t get dirty!! Genius!

All hail the apron inventor, whoever they may be (wikipedia doesn’t tell me).

Anyway, once the food was in the oven, I needed to do some house cleaning and that is when I found myself pushing the vacuum while doning my apron. My old but newly beloved apron.

So now that I love them I need more than one right? And guess where I went to look for some (any good blogger should know the answer) – ETSY!

One of the first ones I found was this one. Now that is a cute apron people.

Unfortunately the title says “Everyday Housewife Apron” and let’s be perfectly clear here: I am NOT an “everyday housewife” so perhaps it’s not for me. (although it still may be…)

Also, there are A LOT, A LOT of aprons on Etsy so… I had to narrow it down somehow. I decided I prefer the ones that cover both the top and bottom (messy when I cook) and here is one I am seriously considering. So cute and great price!

Yeah so I spent all day a little time yesterday shopping for a new apron. I’ll let you know when I make a decision.

Oh, and I am working on getting out of that funk I was in and I have to say it’s going pretty well. I’ve been exercising (running even!), doing some of that retail “therapy,”(obviously – see above!) cooking, praying and eating some chocolate (works every time!). About the only thing I haven’t managed yet is more sleep. What can I say, I’m a night owl.

And also, let me say “Thanks” to everyone who comments here – you also help to lift me up and that is worth SO much…

Oh, I love me a good apron too!! They are fabulous, although I have yet to vacuum in one! 😉

Glad to hear you are hanging in there. It is hard when hubby travels, and sometimes the routine just gets to be alot. Hang in there. Glad to hear you are taking care of YOU!!

I’m a night owl too! Too bad you don’t live next door – I’d come over there and knock on your back door and beg some chocolate from you to help me out of the funk I’ve been in.

Love those aprons. I saw some at Ross this past week and almost bought me one – but, didn’t. I need to get me one before they are no longer “in” and I won’t be able to find one anymore!

    Cute post!

Have a good week – Kellan

Oh, I totally forget to wear an apron! I have 2 very cute Winnie the Pooh ones that I got when we got married. I hardly ever wear them (out of sight, out of mind) but now I will try and remember next time I’m in the kitchen!!

I love to cook… but I’m not ready for an apron. I feel like it’s like buying a van. Oh dear. We are looking at vans…. Maybe I need an apron. sigh.

I have spent so much time looking at aprons on Etsy in the past. I never can choose just one. I have a nursing cover made of the same material as the first apron you linked to. Aprons are very handy–I don’t remember to wear mine enough either.

Glad to hear the funk is lifting.

Imagine how cute and flirty you would look in one of those aprons.
And doesn’t everyone want to look cute AND flirty in the kitchen?
Vacuuming? Well there is a new one for me…but I think it works.
My first swap partner made me a flirty apron and I wear it all the time. Of course it is sooo flippin cute I hate to get it messed up.
Cheers to you and your domesticated self. I suddenly feel the need to don my apron and vacuum! If you could just convince me to run!!!

I had the same revelation a couple months ago when I was doing some marathon cooking.
Good luck in your search for a cute apron. There are so many choices out there right now. I can’t wait to see what you decide.

Those are some rockin’ aprons – I’ve never worn one, either, maybe I should think about it! I got one for a wedding gift, years ago, but can’t find it now.

Glad you’re getting out of your funk – I think it is funky season – must be the weather, I have found myself in one lately too.

I won an apron last year which I love. Yes, the kind I won can be bought on Etsy. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=sr_gallery_1&listing_id=15686598
My apron is adorable – great fabric, well-made, “custom-made” – you can choose the style & fabric if you want and the seller was very friendly when we exchanged e-mails.

but i am pretty sure i too should shop for a new one. primary colored handprints of second graders doesn’t exactly fit my current job description 🙂

I have been dreaming about getting a cute apron lately too! I find myself cleaning/cooking and quickly having to grab my baby and my hands are all needing to be wiped. I was like *aha* I need an apron. How very motherly and domestic of me. So I am on the hunt too and have even thought about maybe sewing one. Now that is pushing it on the domestic front!

    Happy apron shopping!!

I’ve been seriously considering an apron for a few weeks now. One with pockets for stuff I pick up along the way and it would keep my clothes cleaner. Now that someone else has mentioned it, I think it must be fate. This is totally going to be the NEW housewife accessory.

I love the fruit apron. Very cute! Although it looks like the only thing she is making is tea. Isn’t that funny? hehe

So glad you got out of your funk. 🙂

I recently bought an apron… at Ikea of all places. Here it is: http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/60124069. Except mine’s red, not purple. I like how it, like you say, covers my top as well as my bottom half. I’m way more likely to spill on my top half.

And now I have a desire to go vacuum in it. Sounds so old skool.

I wonder if they make aprons that cover your butt too….I am constantly wiping my hands on the back of my pants when I cook and then have to change before I sit down or leave the house….annoying.

I adore Etsy. Funny that I was shopping there yesterday for personalized baby things for my new niece “Olivia,” and oddly bought from a lady in Frisco…funny. Yay for the apron moment. I have yet to experience that epiphany.

I have an apron and I rarely remember to use it but I do love it when I do remember. Better to wipe my hands on the apron than on the back of my pants…

But I have never vacuumed in it. Ever. But if I did I would totally put on a skirt and heels too just like 1950’s sit coms 🙂

Vacuum in an apron? Probably not me? But, I’ve really considered getting one because my big belly keeps getting into our dinners, or maybe it’s the other way around?

Oh yeah…I’m a total night owl too!!! It is so hard not to be when you spend all day with the kiddos and then have hours on end when you KNOW there will be no kids to deal with!

Those aprons are AWESOME! I totally need to get mine out…not that I do any cooking these days…my kiddos keep me too busy for that most days…but, I think I may need to buy one of those aprons anyway! 🙂

Oh, and glad you are out getting out of your funk too! Praying and Exercise are the BEST for that! 🙂

Ooooh I don’t possess an apron but now I totally want one.

Maybe an apron purchase would inspire me to be a little more domesticated?

    Well I can only hope.
