"Mommy Brain" - It's TOTALLY Real

As the pictures in my last post show, we went to the zoo yesterday. In a city an hour away. We caravan-ed with some friends. We made it there and back safely.

But I kinda wonder how.

I did manage to pack snacks but forgot to fill the water bottle that stays in the car -the one we all share.

As we were loading up in the car I handed K a sippy of water but forgot to take it in the zoo with us.

Halfway there I realized I'd forgotten either of our strollers and all that was in the back of the vehicle was the stuff I bought at Target at the after Christmas clearance sale. Yeah, can't push a baby in that.

I did have a sling though. Thank goodness.

And then there were the keys. You know, the car ones.

As we were getting our stuff together to go into the zoo we met our friends in the parking lot. I had this nagging feeling that I did not know where I put my keys. However, said thought went right out my crazy "too-many-thoughts-at-once" brain as one of the other Moms started to talk to me about something and at the same time I was trying to make sure that none of my children got run over.

Then, after our 4.5 hours in the zoo and as we were walking back to the car, I realized after digging for my wallet 3 separate times and also baby wipes and my phone, I'd never seen or even heard the keys in the bag.

And as we approached the car I saw them. Sitting on the back of the full spare tire that hangs on the back of our CR-V. People, they were there the WHOLE time.

Sometimes I wonder where my brain cells have gone. And my keys.

I'm so happy/lucky/glad they were still there. And is it possible to grow back the brain cells?

I'm off to do another Sudoku puzzle just in case. I've heard that's supposed to keep me from getting Alzheimer's or something. Kinda surprised I even remember that.

And I'm posting this picture because I just can't NOT.

Also....

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!!!

My parents are visiting and my Dad's birthday is New Year's Day and I'm so happy to be able to celebrate with him this year (German chocolate cake anyone?)

Here's to a FABULOUS 2011! "See" you next year!

Holiday Favorites - You Capture

It's technically still the holidays and these are some of my favorite shots that I took yesterday during our jaunt through the Baton Rouge zoo.

It was a perfectly lovely day to visit bug the animals!

Little G was a tad obssessesd with his copy of the zoo map that I had to replace 3 times.

And the train ride is ALWAYS a hit! Every zoo in America has some sort of train now, right?

I forgot a stroller so K was either in a sling, on my hip, (hello holiday calories - take that!) or walking/running.

Towards the end of our stay the boys were able to feed some leaves to one of the giraffes! The B Man was all about it but G freaked out a little once he was eye level with her! HA!

Then as we left, K waved to the papparazzi...

And thankfully this handsome guy AND his brother and sister ALL feel asleep on the drive home. Now if only I could have put the car on auto pilot... ;)

For some more "traditional" holiday favorites please go see my Christmas-y post.

I got a sewing machine for Christmas but I didn't make these

Yeah, I hope to sew some things for K and maybe even some other items eventually so I asked Santa for a sewing machine.

andTHEN?

I opened the box and saw all the attachments and got a little overwhelmed.

Good thing my Mom shows up on Thursday and can probably show me how to thread the bobbin and help me get rolling sewing. I'm a visual person. And when I say "visual" I mean "lemme watch someone else do it!" kind. I DON'T mean "look at those graphics in the owners manual" kind. Maybe I'm more of a "hands on" learner actually. Hmmmm....

Anyway. God willing, I'm gonna sew SOMEdarnTHING eventually.

But in the mean time, I have friends to do it for me!

This LOVELY lady and I cooked up a scheme on twitter (and email) for her to make these SUPER awesome SUPER hero capes for my kidlets. This was after I saw the ones she had made for her niece and nephew.

Aren't they just the cutest doggone things? Especially on K? I mean c'mon!!! I'm a dyin' over here from a cute-attack!!

Thank you again Heather for making the SUPER duper capes. The kids love 'em and I've been tying them on A LOT since they opened them up! xo

A "small" Christmas that still seemed "big"

While sitting at dinner on Christmas Eve I had a moment where I was so very thankful.

After chasing Kay Kay around church and remembering the birth of our Lord, I looked around and saw my family and our lovely neighbors who treated us to dinner, and I was even thankful for the spilled glass of water and the extra "hushpuppies" the waitress brought to our table.

And even though I was not with my extended family, I was with my husband and my babies and some wonderful people I call friends.

It may have been the "smallest" Christmas as far as how many people I celebrated with but it was definitely one full of love and joy and beautiful memories.

And really, I could not ask for more.

Hoping everyone else had a wonderful holiday too, "big" or "small"...

Holiday Magic - You Capture

I've always thought there was a little MAGIC in all things small. Like fairies and leprechauns and well, when I was a little girl, even barbie shoes.

Yes I know, I'm weird.

I had a "Littles" doll house that I got one Christmas (I don't think they make Littles anymore and the "baby" of the family figures was SO small that I was surprised to see that my Mom STILL has it at her house!) and I LOVED placing the furniture around the house and making everything in their tiny home just so.

And for some reason I had a memory of all of this while the boys decorated their annual gingerbread house yesterday. And I could see the MAGIC in their eyes.

Ah, to be a kid at Christmas again. It really is so very MAGICal. :)

These are the Days - WW

We had friends over to decorate cookies today. Six boys and Baby K was the only girl. Needless to say after decorating and "downing" a few cookies it turned into full contact football wrestling in the back yard. But that's okay, the weather was nice and boys got some energy out.

But my favorite part of today?

Well, it's a toss up. It may have been when Baby K was toddling around with her favorite lovey, "L.C." (stands for lamb chop).

Or perhaps it was when I looked out the kitchen window at one point and saw this...

That would be my oldest child sitting outside with his legs crossed, while wearing red "festive" socks, reading his "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" coloring book.

Or maybe it was when Little G was singing his version of a line from "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" song and he sang,
"I wouldn't touch you with a thirty-nine and half 'FITball....!!'" (his word for "football", which is also wrong, as it should be "foot pole".) It really is funny, especially before all the explaining and you know, in person.

Or MAYBE, just maybe my favorite part of today was when I ate the gingerbread house cookie that I decorated....

But I'll never tell which one was really my favorite...

p.s. If you haven't read my Christmas letter or seen my our family Christmas card yet, go see!

If I'd written a Christmas letter this year, this it what it would say

Also known as, our year in review...

The year started off colder than usual for Louisiana and in January I made a trip with the baby to meet up with Lisa in Houston. We ate cupcakes and shared some great "friend" time. It was a lovely little trip.

In February we experienced our first Louisiana Mardi Gras parade before leaving for a week long trip to Texas. It was Katie's first trip there and many friends and family got to meet her for the first time, including her Great Grandmother Carolyn (see photo of their hands below).

During Spring Break my brother Larry and his wife Kelley came to visit with their family and became Katie's Godparents. Her baptism was small and intimate and we were blessed that my parents joined us as well.

In early Spring we met many of our neighbors for the first time, including some new ones on the next block that are now some of ours and the kids' best buds. We became closer with many other friends too and now feel more at home at our church and in Lafayette in general. (as a side note, we were even a little shell-shocked at how big the Dallas area REALLY is when we were back visiting at Thanksgiving!)

In April we celebrated Katie's "half birthday" and Ben's 6th birthday within a day of each other.

Later that month I took a trip to the hill country of Texas to hang out with some really special ladies who were training for a half marathon. Good friends, good laughs, good walk/run, good food. It was a much needed getaway for all of us. And I got see and meet some friends and the lovely Christy was our fabulous hostess.

Gavin's 3rd birthday
came and went in May and in that month I decided it was time to change my ways (in the eating and exercise department anyway) and I started the South Beach diet and exercising regularly again, losing 9 lbs. in the first 2 weeks of the "strict" phase.

In June we traveled to Florida with our good friends, The Clarks, and enjoyed the area of Seagrove Beach for the second time with them as our "roomies".

July brought a trip to Texas for my parents' 50th Wedding anniversary celebration and what ended up being somewhat of a family reunion for me, since I hadn't seen many of my aunts, uncles and cousins in a long time. I'm so thankful they had such a lovely party that brought us all together.

On Labor Day weekend we finally "met" NOLA (also known as New Orleans, Louisiana). We'd never been before and we really enjoyed our couple of days sight-seeing and getting to know the lay of the land (especially since an adult only trip was in the works for the next month...)

On October 1st, it was hard to believe, but Miss Katie was already a year old! We celebrated with friends during a party at the house and enjoyed watching her toddle around in her tutu. :)

In the middle of October we took our Big Kids Only trip to NOLA with our neighbor friends and surprised our friend for a milestone birthday. We also celebrated mine and Tim's 11th Wedding anniversary a little early (it was on November 6th). It was a wonderful, fun-filled weekend and we are so thankful to Tim's mom and his brother for staying with the children so we could go.

The very next weekend I headed to Austin to go to Bloggy Boot Camp and had a great time at this one day blogging conference. Plus I was able to see my parents and some great blogging friends from Texas.

On November 13th I ran my first 10K after getting back into running during the Summer. I hope to do another 10K in the near future and really enjoy running as a great way to keep the weight off and a good stress-reliever. I have lost 27-ish pounds since mid-May.

Ben enjoyed playing soccer this Fall season and seemed to be more "into" the game as he continued to play. His team even won the tournament they played at the end of the season and he was extremely proud of his soccer "medal"! He does well in the 1st grade, especially with reading, and recently moved up another level and brought home a second-grade level reading book. He does excellent on all of his Tuesday tests at school and his teacher has nothing but compliments for him.

Gavin can be a challenge some days but is a very loving child and likes to snuggle in our bed in the mornings lately. He attends "day school" 3 days a week and loves arts and crafts and anything that Ben does. ;-) He likes to do most things for himself (also known as he's pretty stubborn) but enjoys for Ben to read to him and I know he is desperate to play sports, which he shows talent for already.

Katelyn is full-on toddler all the sudden and is into anything and everything including the trash bin and all her brothers' things. She's very dependent on her pacifier (as are we, I guess) and has yet to give up drinking out of a bottle. She's pretty good at communicating despite her limited vocabulary and the other day when I asked her in the morning where her pacifier was she found it for me under her doll. I think she's kinda smart. She certainly keeps us on our toes and tends to charm strangers anywhere we go!

Tim continues to work really hard, especially this time of year, for the logistics company we moved here with. He joined me in the weight loss and took off some pounds himself with the low-carb diet and exercise! In the little free time that he has he dabbles in some computer games, watches a few movies here and there and spends time with us! Not to mention during football season he LOVES to watch "his" Cowboys and is doing the best he can to make the boys fans too, even here in Saints country. He's a great father and the master of bath or shower time for the kids. Plus, he's great about letting me have time with my mom friends and even blogging friends and much needed breaks from the kiddos.

We traveled back to Arlington for Thanksgiving this year and had a lovely time seeing friends and giving thanks with Tim's side of our family.

This Christmas we plan to spend as a family of five, here in Lafayette, and expect a visit from my parents the week after.

We wish everyone a VERY Merry Christmas and wish you all the best for 2011!
